In Indian tradition we often find it in Ayurvedic recipes. In Western magical tradition it is often associated with Venus or Jupiter.

Disclosure: The name saffron comes from the Arabic word zaʿfarān, which means precisely 'saffron, crocus.' However, its origin is unknown; some speculate that it comes from the Middle Persian za'ferân but it is not certain.
