In both cases it is always considered a rare and valuable ingredient. Um example is its use among Arab peoples where it is associated with special rites at births, weddings and funerals. In Indian tradition we often find it in Ayurvedic recipes. In Western magical tradition it is often associated with Venus or Jupiter.
Disclosure: The name saffron comes from the Arabic word zaʿfarān, which means precisely 'saffron, crocus.' However, its origin is unknown; some speculate that it comes from the Middle Persian za'ferân but it is not certain.
