A brief history of incense

As the most ancient texts (Egyptian, Tibetan, Indian) testify, the burning of plants, resins or scented woods has always accompanied all sacred ceremonies in different traditions, demonstrating the close link between the use of incense, introspection and prayer. Throughout the history of various populations, from the Indians of North America to the Chinese, we find the common tendency to use incense with specific herbs or resins typical of the vegetation characteristic of the place.

Parallel to the use of incense, a trade in it developed, and for millennia it represented one of the most important exchanges, especially in the Mediterranean basin and the East. In more recent times, the function of incense has shifted from a sacred to a more profane dimension, being of great importance in the treatment of the sick. In fact, many of the most common incenses have beneficial effects on many lung diseases due to their antiseptic action.

Today, in alternative disciplines such as yoga, aromatherapy and Ayurvedic medicine, the use of incense represents a resource that facilitates contact with oneself, rebalances and reactivates energies.
