History and traditions: Verbena was known in popular traditions because it was considered capable of influencing oneiric activity, the memory of dreams and preventing nightmares. Among the Celtic population, priestesses and druids used it to recall premonitory dreams for divination purposes. Verbena fumigations were used to help in times of stress and exhaustion. It has also been considered an inspirational herb, therefore an ally of poets and writers.
