Typology: Basic incense - Root

Plant: Nardostachys jatamansi

Origin: Himalayas

Aroma: Strong, earthy tending towards bitter and sour

History and traditions: It grows in the humid valleys and on the slopes of the Himalayas at an altitude between 3500 and 5500 meters. It has a harmonizing effect on our entire body and on the chakras, especially that of the heart. Relax the mind and balance the nervous system. According to traditional Tibetan medicine it is able to help people who have sleep problems and suffer from excessive nervous tension.

Information: Nardo root is one of the typical ingredients of both Tibetan and Indian preparations; it is found both in traditional medicine and as an ingredient for many incenses. The intense and penetrating scent makes it unique and brings to mind the high-altitude monasteries where this root was frequently burned. Also mentioned in the Gospels in the episode of Mary Magdalene and by Pliny and Discorides, spikenard oil was what Mary Magdalene put on Jesus' feet.
